Kos in Greece is the second most popular island of Dodecanese, after Rhodes. Known for its historical sites, beautiful beaches, and lush vegetation, the island is visited by almost 1 million tourists every year!

Kos island has a 5,000 years long history and has been influenced by many cultures, such as the Ancient Greeks, the Romans, the Venetians, the medieval Knights, and the Ottomans.
Thanks to the remains of all these cultures, sightseeing is one of the best things to do on the island.
The most important of them is Asklepieion, one of the top holistic healing centers of the ancient world, which followed the medical guidelines of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine.
Other sights worth visiting include churches, Neratzia medieval castle, the ancient Greek Agora, and Antimachia Castle.

One of the recommended activities to do is cycling. It’s not a surprise that Kos is also known as the “Cycling island”, as bicycling is a very popular means of transportation there.
There’s also a 13 km long cycling road, ideal for bike strolls, starting from Faros beach and ending at Psalidi beach! Apart from the cycling road, though, there are many mountain cycling trails, ideal for cycling in nature!

What can we say about its beaches? The options are endless! Sandy, shingly, crowded, secluded, organized, unorganized… There’s a beach for every taste and they are all easily accessible.

Ancient Asklepieon
In close distance to the Town, there is the ancient sanctuary of Asklepios. This was actually a healing centre and in fact the father of medicine, Hippocrates, would teach there.
Thermes beach
In short drive from the Town is the famous beach of Themes, with black pebbles and thermal waters. The waters in this beach has healing facilities.
Thermal Springs
In the location of Agios Fokas, there is a sea-pool with hot springs, known as the thermes. The place is well known as one of the most outstanding places on Kos.
Ancient Gymnasium
The Hellenistic Gymnasium is part of a complex of the Hellenistic and Roman periods that also includes the Acropoli, the Hippodrome, the Nymphaeum a very elaborated structure dating from the 3rd century BC, as well as the ruins of the temples of Aphrodite and Hercules
Kos Town
The main town is a beautiful place with distinctive architecture. The old part of the town has Medieval style, with Venetian houses and Ottoman mosques.
Kastri Islet
Kastri is a tiny island right opposite the beach of Agios Stefanos. Remains of fortification and a small church are located on this islet, which is reached by boat. Some people even swim there.
Basilicas of Saint Stephen
A complex of Paleo-Christian basilicas is located near the beach of Kamari, southern Kos. The basilicas date from the 5th and the 6th century AD.
Casa Romana
This house is a beautiful Roman mansion and its architectural style resembles of the houses in Pompeii. Some remarkable frescoes and nice atriums can be seen inside.
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Kos stands in the heart of Kos Town. It includes findings from the Ancient Agora, the Asklepieion and other sites on the island.
Nerantzia Castle
Nerantzia Castle is actually the Medieval Castle at the port of the capital town. This is an interesting monument to explore and gives nice view to the Aegean Sea.
Ottoman Mosques
The rich history of Kos, and all Dodecanese islands in general has vividly left its mark on the architecture of the islands. That is the case with the mosques of Kos Town, strong reminders of the Ottoman rule on the island, that lasted for about four centuries.
Windsurfing
Windsurfing is a popular sport on the island of Kos. The best places for windsurfing and kite surfing are the beaches of Mastihari, Tigaki, Psalidi and Kefalos.
