Best of Milos by Bus

General Description

This is a special day tour to discover the fantastic island of Milos with the special geological landscape and the natural secrets. It is ideal for people who do not wish to rent a car or use the public transport.

First stop: Cave of Papafrangas
Departing from Pollonia at 10:00 am, our first stop is the Cave of Papafragas. This complex of sea caves was formed by volcanic activity and is divided by a small ravine. Many people actually snorkel in the turquoise waters at the bottom of the ravine and explore the caves. We will stop for a while to see this interesting spot and we will also talk about the close archaeological site of Filakopi (with no visit there).

Ancient Filakopi developed as a settlement from the Neolithic Period (9,000 to 4,000 BC) until about 1,000 BC. British archaeologists excavated the site during the 1890s and actually discovered tools from obsidian, which is a volcanic glass similar to granite. These tools and other findings are today hosted in the Archaeological Museum of Milos in Plaka. From Papafragas we can see the remains of the ancient city walls, although the tour does not include visit to the actual archaeological site.

Next stop: Sarakiniko
After our short stop in Papafragas, we drive along the northern side of Milos island and arrive in Sarakiniko. This is probably the most photographed spot of Milos. This fantastic place with the pure white stone sculpted by volcanic eruptions looks like landing on the moon. Beneath the white rocks are impressive sea caves. Short stop for 30 min.

Next stop: Plaka, Klima and Catacombs
We will continue the beautiful road and arrive in Plaka, the capital town of Milos. Walking through the village, we will discover a traditional place of Cycladic architecture, stunning views to the Aegean Sea and pastries with delicious homemade sweets. After Plaka, we head to the early Christian catacombs, just a couple of km away, and the ancient city of Klima.

An ancient marble theatre is found close to the Catacombs that can be seen only from above because restoration works takes place there. On the way to this ancient theatre, we shall see the spot where the famous statue Venus de Milo, now exhibited in the Louvre in Paros, was discovered in 1820. Our visit in the Catacombs will last for about 15 min. This is an important complex of labyrinths that date from the 1st century AD, as old as the famous Catacombs of Rome. Only part of the catacombs is open to the public (catacombs admission is not included in the tour price, about 3 euros per person, on Tuesdays the catacombs are closed).

Our tour continues to the fishing village of Klima, which was the port of the ancient city of Milos. This lovely port is lined up with houses that have boat garages on the ground floor. These houses are called syrmata and their doors and window shutters are painted in different colours, like blue, red and yellow.

Last stop: Paleochori or Provatas Beaches
After all this interesting sightseeing, where we have covered the most important places to see in Milos, it is time to enjoy a swim in the crystal waters of the sea. We shall go for swimming in Paleochori or Provatas beach, two large bays on the southern side of the island. Both beaches are organized with sunbeds, umbrellas and taverns and have fantastic, crystal water.

NOTE: The itinerary can change at the discretion of the guide to make sure that our visitors get the best experience. The beach can change according to weather conditions.

The tour starts from Pollonia. However, we offer free transfer from Adamas or Plaka (just mention it in the comments field during the booking procedure). We can also offer transfer from Paleochori or Provatas with extra cost (select this choice during the booking procedure). If you need transfer from another place, tell us to see if we can provide it.
