ISLAND HOPPING OPTIONS

World Champion Jet Ferry by Seajets docking at the port of Tourlos in Mykonos

Seajets Ferry at Mykonos port

Mykonos is a cosmopolitan island and that is why numerous ferry routes connect the so-called “island of winds” with other islands of the Cyclades and Crete during the summer season. Santorini and Crete (Heraklion) remain the most common island-hopping destinations from Mykonos. At the same time, Paros and Naxos are also common options for travelers who want to visit more islands.
Some other Cycladic islands that could be island-hopping destinations from Mykonos are Milos (at least two ferry crossings daily), Ios (three ferry crossings daily), Syros (two or three ferry crossings daily), Andros (seven ferry crossings daily), Sifnos (one ferry crossing daily), and many more. In addition, for those who may want a change of scenery, Northeastern Aegean islands, like Chios and Ikaria can also be reached from Mykonos via a ferry.

WHERE TO GO FOR A DAY TRIP

If you want to take a break from the intense life of Mykonos and retreat to a place full of tranquility to recharge your batteries, Tinos is the best choice. Being a mainly religious island, as it is home to the most important and renowned church in Greece, its atmosphere is very peaceful. The island is not popular among tourists, nor is it large in size, so you will be able to enjoy a day of rejuvenation. Tickets to Tinos do not exceed 16 euros while the journey duration starts from 15 minutes!
If you don't feel like leaving the lively climate of Mykonos behind, another island that lies close to Mykonos and is a perfect choice for a day trip is Paros. Although not as cosmopolitan as Mykonos, it is one of the liveliest islands in Greece and also boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean. In addition, the journey takes less than an hour on most ferries!

TRAVEL TIPS

Here are some useful and practical tips to organize your traveling experience efficiently:

  • • If you are traveling to/from Mykonos during the high season (June to mid-September), it is strongly recommended to book your tickets in advance (four months ahead) since popular routes like those get fully booked quickly.
  • • Although high-speed vessels sail faster, they get affected by the strong winds. That causes schedule delays and seasickness to many passengers. A conventional vessel is bigger in size and hardly gets affected by the winds.
  • • If you visit Mykonos from Athens (Piraeus or Rafina) during the high season, make sure to be at the port at least one hour in advance. The port frequently gets busy and crowded.
  • • When departing from Mykonos keep in mind that the port gets crowded due to the thousands of travelers embarking or disembarking from the ferries. Even though distances between the regions of the island are short, heavy traffic occurs, so your route will probably last longer than expected.

• Where is the ferry port?

The port where all the ferries arrive and depart in Mykonos is the New Port, located 2 km from the town of Mykonos in the Tourlos region. It is a modern and well-organized port with some facilities such as coffee shops, ATMs, and small shops.

• How to move around from the port?

At the port, you will find a bus station (KTEL Buses), a taxi rank, a seabus station (that connects the port with the town of Mykonos via sea), and some car rental companies. Due to the vast amount of tourists visiting the island during summer, it is strongly recommended to have booked your transfer from the port to your hotel in advance with Greeka.

• How do I get from the airport to the port?

The airport is 6.8 km south of the Νew Port of Tourlos. There is a taxi rank with a few taxis waiting during the day, but it is more reliable to book your transfer with Greeka in advance. Also, a bus stop lies in front of the terminal building. The bus heads to the Main Town and, from there, you need another bus to reach the port.

• What is better? Flying or taking the ferry to Mykonos?

Although Mykonos has an airport and flying there is a timesaver, the most common way to travel to the island is by ferry. Due to the limited flights and the high demand, air tickets are pricey. Taking the ferry to Mykonos is recommended. You can find tickets with fixed prices available online. Lastly, the experience of traveling by ferry across the Aegean Sea is lovely and the perfect introduction to your summer holidays!
