Athens Plaka

General information

Plaka Neighborhood in Athens: Following Ermou Street, the most famous commercial street of Athens, and going down south, you will arrive at the neighborhood of Plaka. The area is found between Syntagma and Monastriraki and it is easily accessed on foot from the center of Athens.
Due to the numerous ancient Greek monuments that are scattered all around the area, Plaka is also known as the "neighborhood of the gods".

Plaka is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Athens, located right below the Acropolis Hill. It is extremely beautiful and picturesque, standing out for its authentic character and traditional layout.
The largest part of Plaka consists of neoclassical houses that date back to the 19th century, although archaeological findings suggest that the region has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times.

All buildings in Plaka have been listed and this is the only part of Athens that has been untouched by modern urban development, allowing you to get a glimpse of the city's past.
Not much has changed in Plaka for the past 100 years.

The most charming part of Plaka is definitely the settlement of Anafiotika. The settlers who constructed the neighborhood arrived from Anafi island and as a result, you will encounter pretty Cycladic houses leading to Acropolis.

In the heart of the town
Plaka is one of the most picturesque and oldest districts of Athens. It is characterized by the several monuments that carry an important history. The historic neighborhoods of Plaka are actually a symbol of authenticity in Athens, you certainly think about it as you walk around. Anafiotika is a quarter with old traditional houses and blue doors that bring a Cycladic atmosphere. This quarter was first inhabited by refugees from Anafi, a small island next to Santorini, and the people have maintained the architecure of their homeland.

Plaka is a trading spot with high tourist movement as it has several archeological places to demonstrate. Walking around, we saw Byzantine churches, the ancient market and the Tower of the Winds. Our travel guide said that we couldn't miss Plaka and indeed you go through this quarter to visit most sights in Athens.

Every little shop of Plaka satisfies the need of every customer. They sell a huge variety of things such as books, clothes and rare pieces of jewelry. Going out from Monastiraki station you will surely enjoy walking around market places, the antique shops and flea markets.
