Full of picturesque houses, paved alleys, and little shops, cafes, and restaurants on every corner, Plaka is one of the most enticing areas in Athens to stay in.

CENTRAL
Our recommendations:
• Athenswas (Acropolis) • Coco-mat (Acropolis) • Athens New (Syntagma) • Grande Bretagne (Syntagma) • A for Athens (Monastiraki) • Electra Metropolis (Syntagma)
If you are looking for an option that is located not far from all the major attractions of the city, we advise you to choose one of the central hotels.
The most popular areas in the center of Athens are Syntagma Square, Monastiraki, Akropoli, Plaka, and Psiri. Those are the city’s most quaint neighborhoods and common meeting points, having a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars.
The center is always humming with activity, even late at night or during early morning hours.
It also offers multiple options of transportation, including taxis and public means of transport (buses, metro, electric railway, trolleybuses, and trams).
Most connecting points between metro lines and bus lines are located in the area of Syntagma.
A more upscale option would be the neighborhood of Kolonaki.
If you’d like to experience the alternative side of Athens, there are the edgy neighborhoods of Exarchia, Omonia and Metaxourgio. In these areas, expect to come across signs of urban decay and avoid strolling around late at night.
NEAR THE BEACH
Our recommendations:
• Divani Apollon Palace (Vouliagmeni) • Grecotel Cape Sounio (Sounio) • The Margi (Vouliagmeni) • Grand Resort Lagonissi (Lagonisi) • Four Seasons Astir Palace (Vouliagmeni)
The beaches along the coastline of Athens are a very popular destination, especially during the warm summer months.
For a chance to experience the Athens Riviera, it is recommended to select a hotel that is located very close to the beach.
In these areas, you will encounter several facilities, including restaurants, cafes, and beach bars, where you can spend your summer vacation in Athens relaxing on the beach.
The most popular locations are Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, while if you’d like to stay in a place away from the city but close enough to it, we recommend Cape Sounio or Lagonissi.
The distance from the city center is estimated to be around 30-60 minutes, depending on the location. Although quite a few public transport options are available, you should consider renting a car - is a must if you choose to stay in Cape Sounio or Lagonissi.

Where should I stay if I am travelling to the islands?
Most ferries to the islands depart from the port of Piraeus, which is the main and larest port of Athens. Rafina and Lavrio are smaller ports closer to the Airport.
Piraeus is almost 11 km away from the center of Athens which means it is a 15-20 minute drive by taxi or 20-30 minutes by the Blue Metro Line.
Many travellers decide to stay at the city center and take a taxi or the metro while few prefer to stay at Piraeus in order to be closer to the ferry departing area.
The hotels around the port are not as stylish as in Athens and might not always be close to the exact departing point.
If you want to visit Athens during your holiday, it is recommended to choose accommodation in the center of Athens.
Rafina is a port located 30 km away from the Airport and 30 km away from the center of Athens. If your ferry departs from Rafina and you do not plan a thorough visit to Athens, you can book your stay there.
