Margaret Dakin 03 Dec 2023Do not visit this monastery
In the past 2 months the monastery cats have "disappeared", apparently sent to live somewhere else by the abbot who thinks they make the place look untidy and dirty. There were about a dozen cats living here until late autumn. They were all sterilized, vaccinated and fed each day by volunteers and any cats that needed veterinary treatment were taken to be treated. Over the summer, access to feed the cats was denied, they had an area where they were fed and housing there for them. This was blocked off by the monks so the cats had to be fed in the car park. Now all the cats have gone. These cats have been there for many years, they have no reason to go anywhere else when they are fed and looked after. This is simply a case of them being disappeared, probably poisoned or worse. Volunteers have worked very hard and spent a lot of money treating and feeding these cats over the years. They were in good health and the number of kittens being born has vastly reduced. There is no reason at all to get rid of them. They were loved by visitors to the monestary and were an attraction in their own right. Sadly, they are gone and I'm asking people to not go, do not donate to the monestary and tell them you are shocked by their appalling treatment of these animals

anniawe34kl 10 Aug 2009Take boats to remote beachesPaleokastritsa of Corfu is absolutely gorgeous. We spent 4 glorious days there swimming in breathtakingly crystal clear waters and visiting secluded and beautiful beaches. Our hotel, the Akrotiri Beach Hotel, provided good accommodation and our room overlooked a beautiful bay. Only one bad thing, but I don't think it is a fault of the hotel: a couple of mornings we had no running water in the hotel, so water supply to the island seems to be lacking. For a tourist area this was unexpected.
There was a great supply of good restaurants and the area is within an easy drive (20 minutes) from CorfuTown. We ate out at different restaurants every night and the food and service was excellent everywhere we went. Recommended restaurants in the Paleokastritsa area include Nereidis (which included a greek fire dancing show), Nausica Restaurant and Limani Restaurant located near the Glass Bottom Boat pick up wharf. The local food was wonderful, we enjoyed white bread, grilled/baked fetta, stuffed tomatoes, moussaka and heaps of other Greek delights.
Take a taxi boat service and go to Paradise Beach. You will probably be the only ones there, so you will have the whole beautiful beach to yourselves. The beach at the end of the road at Paleokastritsa is also nice, at the point where you can hire paddleboats. Water at both beaches was amazing.

luca29 16 Dec 2008The most popular tourist spotPaleokastritsa is the most popular tourist spot on Corfu, probably thanks to its delightful landscape and the clean beach. The beach may get cold some days but it is a great place to lay down on the pebbles and enjoy a day in the sun. Apart from swimming, Paleokastritsa is also famous for its Monastery on top of a hill. Just outside the monastery, there is a balcony with a canon from where you can take great photos.
