As tradition says, it was also in Kalavryta, at the Monastery of Agia Lavra, where the Greek Revolution against the Ottomans was declared on March 25th, 1821. Close to the village of Zachlorou is the historical monastery of Mega Spileo, constructed right against the slopes of a rocky hill. This monastery was originally founded in the 4th century AD.
On the hill above Kalavryta Town, right on the spot where almost the entire male population of the town was executed, there is a nice monument dedicated to peace and freedom.
The town of Kalavryta has traditional style and it is surrounded by wild mountains. It gets very popular in winter as a ski destination from Athens.
