hilary.williams1 08 Aug 2010Small and friendlyLourdas is a small village about twenty five minutes from the capital Argostoli. It boasts a long, sandy beach and beautiful clear, blue waters. My favourite taverna, Klimatis, is situated by the beach. The roof consists of a canopy of vines, the tables and chairs are in the Greek style and the staff are very helpful and friendly. There is a varied menu. Fish is plentiful along with the Greek options of Souvlaki, Moussaka and Kephalonia meat pie. After my meal, I enjoy a walk along the beach, watching the sun go down. A perfect way to end a day.
Close to Lourdas are small beaches including Pessada and Agios Thomas, which are accessible by car. At Agios Thomas are a couple of tavernas by the beach and a small church nestled on the hill above. From Pessada the ferry leaves daily for Zakynthos.
Travelling out of Lourdas on the road towards Skala is a small road leading down to the Sissian Monastery. It has been rebuilt after the original structure was mainly demolished by the earthquake of 1953. Further down a rough track is the old building. A few walls remain plus the well in overgrown gardens. The whole area is very peaceful and it is shaded by pine trees. I start to walk further down the track, which would bring me to a cove but I give up when I decide it would take a crane to hoist me back up the steep hill!
To reach the north of Kephalonia, there is a pretty route from Lourdas, through the mountain village of Marco Poulo and onwards to Sami, Agia Efimia and Fiskardo. This trip can easily be done in a day. Another worthwhile excursion is the ferry from Argostoli over to Lixouri. The ferry carries cars and once on Lixouri, the hill villages and beach at Petani are well worth exploring. There are so many beautiful places to stay on Kephalonia, Lourdas is certainly one of my favourites. -
cicipu 04 Aug 2010Nice and cheap fish tavernsLourdas is one of the best beaches we visited in Kefalonia. The village is quite small. It is barely a village but a group of tourist accommodation. It has a number of studios, villas, and nice hotels. Although it was a bit crowded, as we expected in summer, yet it was spacious. We did not feel it was full. We got good meals and snacks from the restaurants on the beach. We felt the prices were quite reasonable considering the number of tourists who visit the place. Weather was not very hot but warm. We got good quality sea food and cheaper that in other places ofthe island, like Fiscardo which has the most expensice prices from all villages in Kefalonia, I believe. Sun beds and umbrellas were available for rental in Lourdas, but preffered not to rent.
