Tinos Geography

Tinos belongs to the Cyclades islands and it is situated between Andros and Mykonos. The total land surface of this beautiful island is 194 sq km and its coastline stretches for almost 114 km. The entire region is covered with rugged mountains and dotted with over 40 villages. Mount Tsiknias is the highest mountain on Tinos rising at 750 meters above sea level. On the other hand, Mount Exobourgo is also quite noticeable because of its jagged shape.

Between these two mountains, there lies the fertile plain of Falatados. Even though it is at a height of 300 meters above sea level, it is relatively flat. The geography of Tinos is known for its beautiful landscape. From Panormos and Kolimbithra in the north of the island to Agios Sostis in the south, there are some wonderful sandy beaches.

The beautiful village of Pyrgos is located on the west side of Tinos, surrounded by huge mountains where you can come across mines of exquisite green marble. The landscape around Volax is very unique as it is covered with rare giant boulders.

Tinos also has some important mineral resources of chrome, lead, iron, and manganese. This white and green marble of Tinos is extremely famous worldwide and it has been used in the construction of many works of art since ancient times. In fact, the tradition of working with marble is very long on Tinos, strongly connected to the local history, and a museum functions in Pyrgos village for this purpose.
