Syros Sights & Attractions

The impressive neoclassical building that houses the Town Hall of Ermoupolis is the trademark of the island. It was designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller and is located in Miaouli Square.

Vaporia is the most picturesque quarter of Ermoupolis, with elegant mansions built just above the sea. In this district lies the church of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the island.

Constructed in 1864 by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo, the Apollo Theatre of Syros is located in Miaouli Square. It frequently hosts interesting performances, exhibitions, and lectures.

The Catholic Cathedral of Saint George is a fascinating church in Ano Syros that features nice interior designs, an exhibition, a church organ, and a large bell tower. Its location allows gazing at the mesmerizing Ermoupolis from above.

Located near the magnificent cathedral of Saint George, the Jesuit Monastery of Agios Ioannis (Saint Jean) was founded in 1535 to help the poor. During pirate raids, inhabitants would hide themselves inside the monastery's crypts.

This museum is dedicated to Markos Vamvakaris, one of the most famous rebetiko musicians in Greece, who was born in Ano Syros. It hosts some personal items and photos of the renowned artist.

The Archaeological Museum of Syros is housed inside the Town Hall of Syros in Miaouli Square. It was established in 1835 and hosts exhibits from excavations in Chalandriani Syros and other Cycladic islands, like Amorgos and Kythnos.

The Industrial Museum is housed in three old factories in Ermoupolis. It exhibits old machinery and tools from factories around the island, maps, architectural designs, pictures of local painters, and ship models.

The Hermoupolis Textile Museum is a large showcase of sewing equipment, fabrics, and various items inside a restored factory, promoting an integral part of Syros’ cultural background and heritage.

Santa Paku is a small, white Catholic church atop a hill on Galissas with a bell, a chandelier, and some icons, which offers spectacular views over the Aegean Sea.

The Church of Resurrection was built in 1870 on top of a hill above Ermoupolis.  It offers a terrific view of the neighboring islands of Tinos and Mykonos.

The church of Agios Nikolaos is located close to the port of Ermoupolis, in the quarter of Vaporia. This impressive church was built in the 19th century and has two tall bell towers and an eye-catching dome.

The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is among the most important churches of Ermoupolis. A holy icon of the Virgin Mary, made by the famous painter El Greco, is housed inside it.

The ancient site of Chalandriani is quite interesting, as the graves discovered there were corbelled and included a lot of wealthy items, such as unique-looking vessels in the shape of frying pans.

The Monastery of the Jesuits is located in Ano Syros and works since the 18th century. Today it hosts a valuable library and its two nuns are followers of Saint Clara.

The Museum of Cycladic Art is located in Ermoupolis, near Miaouli Square. It exhibits an interesting collection of Cycladic art and findings from the Cycladic period excavated in Syros and other Cycladic islands.

The Cyclades Art Gallery of Syros is a municipally-operated gallery in Ermoupolis that hosts temporary exhibitions about local customs and Cycladic history, as well as a small theater.

The remote chapel of Agios Stefanos is a fantastic small structure between large rocks, with a bell tower, a spacious terrace, an iconostasis, and whitewashed walls. It offers mesmerizing views over the sea horizon.

Kyveli Institute is a cultural center that features collectibles, memorabilia, and belongings of late actress Kyveli Andrianou.

Agios Dimitrios is a wonderful church near Vaporia with a double bell tower, beautiful interior and exterior designs, and views of the endless blue sea.

The Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Lord is an impressive church in the town of Ermoupolis, featuring three arches, a gorgeous icon, and lots of space for its visitors.
