The traditional windmills of Ios: Walking to the entrance of Chora, the capital of Ios, you will see some very well-preserved windmills surrounded by beautiful, colorful gardens that are now used as homes.
The majority of the windmills are located in the beautiful capital of the island - Chora. Twelve windmills on the top of the mountain slope complete its scenic beauty. They are weathered but still proudly watch over the small church of Agios Nikolaos nearby. Two of the windmills have been restored today.
Back in the day, those windmills were used to produce energy to grind grains and helped enormously by contributing to the agricultural economy and satisfying the food requirements of the island. Today they stand as ornamental monuments that add to the landscape and bear testimony to the unique local architecture.
