Andros Sights & Attractions

The Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1979 and organizes painting exhibitions of local and foreign artists. This is the most important museum of Andros.

This museum presents the entire history of Andros merchant marine, from the ancient times to our day. It is located in Chora, up in the square of the Unknown Sailor.

The lighthouse Tourlitis first operated in 1887 and was renovated in 1994. This is the first automatic lighthouse of the Greek lighthouse system. It is considered as one of the most beautiful worldwide.

In eastern Batsi are the picturesque villages of Katakilos as well as Pano Katakilos located on both side of a ravine. Due to the presence of the springs that are found in this part of the island, there are many gushing waterfalls as well.

People in the ancient times used to believe that the springs gushed from the ancient Temple of Dionysus and that they flowed with wine during the day of his celebration.

This area has lush green and rare vegetation. Among the plants found, there are oaks, fig trees, blackberries, ivies, oleanders and different kinds of bushes, while regarding the animals that live there, there are badgers, snakes, and species of birds.

This library is housed in a wonderful Neoclassical building in Chora. The library contains about 3000 tomes from the collection of Theofilos Kairis, who was a scholar and priest in Andros (1784-1852). In summer, some art exhibitions are organized in the new exhibition area of the library.

This small chapel on the rock is the most typical church of Andros. Panagia Thalassini is located in the old harbor of Chora.

The Church of Panagia Theoskepasti is the protector of the island. It is built on top of a cave, where the holy icon of the Virgin Mary was found.

In the mountainous village of Ano Pitrofos, close to Menites, is the Cyclades Olive Museum. This is a private museum housed in a restored oil mill, showing the traditional way of animal-powered olive production.

In Korthi area you can find more than 40 windmills, excellent samples of pre-industrial technology. Most of them are in Dipotamata, but there are also in Aidonia, Vouni and Piso Meria.

Paleopolis was the ancient capital of Andros and lies 9 km from Batsi, with its port and market sunk. Its name means old city and flourished from the Classical ages till the Roman times.

The monastery of Saint Irene was founded in 1780 at Archontas in the village of Apoikia by the Spiridou brothers, both of whom were monks.

The Castle of Faneromeni is located in close proximity to Kochylou and dates back to the Middle Ages.

The Geometric settlement of Zagora is strategically located on a plateau of a precipitous headland. This site was first discovered in the 19th century by the erstwhile Ephor of Antiquities Ant. Meliarakis.

The tower of Agios Petros is a quite well-preserved tower, placed on a hill overlooking the bay of Gavrio. It was probably built in the Hellenistic Era, in the 4th or 3rd century BC.

Situated in Kairi Square, just in front of the Museum of Modern Art, the Archaeological Museum of Andros was built in 1981, sponsored by Goulandris Foundation. The two floors of the museum hosts findings from excavation sites on the island, such as sings, marble statues, tools, and pieces of weapon.
