Zakynthos Island is located west of the Greek mainland and northwest of the Peloponnese. It is one of the Ionian Islands, which explains the Italian elements and influences in its history and culture. The third largest of the group, its total land surface area is 410 sq km. Its coastline is about 123 km and hosts some of the finest beaches in the country.
The geography of Zakynthos includes rocky and steep mountains on the west and fertile plains on the southeastern part. The tallest peak is Vrachionas, rising at an altitude of 758 meters. Due to the mountainous areas, the western part of the island has been left untouched and boasts beautiful natural habitats. The southeastern regions consist of vast areas with lush vegetation; this is the most tourist-developed part of Zakynthos.
Even though there are no rivers on the island, the soil is quite fertile and has a rich amount of carbonic calcium. Zakynthos also has several arches and cliffs stretching out into the sea at various points. Of course, the island's trademark is the numerous beaches offering exceptional panoramic beauty.
The most famous beach on the island is known as Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, the forever home of the remains of a ship (hence the name). The soft sand of the beaches on Zakynthos creates the perfect conditions for the Mediterranean sea turtle Caretta Caretta to lay its eggs. They usually go to the beach of Dafni. Two other popular breeding places for the Caretta-Caretta are the small islets of Pelouzo and Marathonisi on the southern side of Zakynthos.
