Famous from myths and legends, Mycenae was a strong military town and gave its name to an entire era, the Mycenaean times. Discovered in the late 19th century, Mycenae is famous for its Cyclopean Walls, the Treasury of Atreus and the Lion Gate. These three are the most famous site in the archaeological site of Mycenae. Do not also miss the Archaeological Museum, located right next to the site and displaying interesting findings from Ancient Mycenae and other close excavations. In short driving distance from Mycenae are the archaeological site of Epidaurus and the beautiful town of Nafplion, also worth a visit.

This is the most famous spot of Mycenae. The entrance gate to the ancient town of Mycenae has two lions on top of it.

Located in a walking distance from the ancient site, the Treasury of Atreus is actually a vaulted tomb. When it was discovered, it has already been looted centuries ago. Archaeologists believe that this was the tomb of Agamemnon, the famous king of Mycenae and that a golden treasury has been buried inside with the king.

The vaulted tomb of Clytemnestra in Mycenae dates to about 1,200 B.C. Although it is not certain if this is the true tomb of Clytemnestra, it is believed so because of the gold jewelry that was found inside and that must belong to a queen.

The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae has two floors with exhibits from excavations in the site. It is located in close distance to the Lion Gate.

Because of their huge size, the myth says that the walls of Mycenae were constructed by Cyclops, some gigantic creatures with one eye. This is why they named these walls Cyclopean.
