Zakynthos Sights & Attractions

Blue Caves are located on the northernmost side of the island. They were created by wave erosions and excursion boats get through their arches.

Marathonisi is a pristine island in Laganas Bay, right opposite Limni Keriou Beach. Excursion boats go to Marathonisi, which is known for its sandy beaches and green landscape. On the soft sand of Marathonisi, many Caretta caretta sea turtles go to lay their eggs.

The church of Agios Dionysios, the patron saint of the island, is located close to the port. It has an impressive bell tower, the tallest in the town, and hosts the shrine of the saint.

The church of Agios Nikolaos Molos, located in Solomos Square, is the only building of Venetian style that survived the earthquake of 1953. It was later reconstructed keeping its original characteristics.

Argassi Bridge is built at the outfall of a river and is today ruined, located 10 meters from the seashore, in the small harbor of Argassi. Almost half of the bridge, which used to be part of the main road, is now resting on the shore.

The Castle of Zakynthos is set on a hill above Zante Town, in the region of Bohali. Constructed in the 15th century, probably around 1480, this Castle protected the island from many pirate raids and enemy attacks.

This lovely park in the area of Volimes is home to many self-grown trees, bushes and a lot of animal species. Narrow, stone paths cross it. 

This museum is located in Agios Markos Square. Ιt is dedicated to the poet Dionysios Solomos and other eminent Zakynthians. A collection of manuscripts, portraits, personal clothes and busts of famous intellectuals from Zakynthos are housed inside.

The Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa is located on the slopes of a hill above Argassi. Although the monastery is half-ruined, it is worth visiting for the gorgeous view of the island.

Korakonissi is a rock formation that serves as a magnificent swimming spot. It is a secluded place on the western side of the island.

The Monastery of Yperagathou is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Located in the center of the island, the monastery can be reached through a track road. 

The Monastery of Anafonitria is located on the northwest side of the island. Agios Dionysios, the patron saint of the island, spent his last days as a monk there.

The Post Byzantine Art Museum of Zakynthos Town is housed in a large building on Solomos Square, the largest square of the town. It exhibits valuable icons, ecclesiastical clothing, frescoes from the 16th-19th century and papers and photos of Zakynthos before the earthquake of 1953.

The church of Agios Markos, located next to the Solomos Museum, is small in size and constitutes the only Catholic church on Zakynthos island.

The church of Agios Nikolaos in Kiliomeno is a Venetian church with an impressive bell tower. Quite interesting is the fact that the church and the bell tower are separated by the street, looking like two different units.

This lovely church is located on the southern side of Keri village. It has a large bell tower and is surrounded by verdant vegetation.

The Monastery of Panagia Spiliotissa is located on the northern side of the island. Constructed on the edge of a steep cliff, it is surrounded by lush greenery.

The Monastery of Panagia Eleftherotria is located close to Maherado and the church of Agia Mavra. It looks more like a castle than a monastery. The location gives an amazing view of the countryside.

The church of Agia Mavra in Maherado was built in the 14th century and it is among the most important churches in Zakynthos. It has an imposing Venetian bell tower next to the door. The church celebrates the memory of Agia Mavra on May 3rd.

The Helmis Museum of Natural History is located in the mountainous village of Agia Marina, in the center of Zakynthos. It was established in 2000 and aims to present the rare flora, fauna, and sea life of the island.

The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon is located atop a cliff with a gorgeous view of the sea. Its exact date of construction is not known, but in 1553 it was destroyed by pirates.
