Samothraki or
Hora It
is a traditional village built amphitheatrically. It's perched on the slope of
the mountain where was built by the inhabitants so as to avoid the raids by the
pirates who pillaged the island.Here you can see traditional small,stone-built houses
with tiled roofs and picturesque cobbled streets. The main sights are the
church of the Assumption built in 1875, the folklore museum and the Tower of Gattilousi.
Overview:
Known from antiquity, 'Thracian Samos' was referred to by Homer,
according to whom, at the top of Saos mountain (tallest peak of the Aegean, next
to those of Crete) Poseidon sat and watched
the Trojan War. Later it attracted visitors from the whole of Greece, due to the
Kaviria Mysteries ('Kaveiria Mysteria' in Greek), dedicated to the Great Gods.
Those where the only mysteries free to all, men, women, slaves, Greek and
non-Greek.
Today Samothraki is a very quiet island, ideal for relaxed vacations
close to nature. The island has only a few small sandy beaches, but the most
exciting thing is the mainland, the mountain, the rivers, lakes and waterfalls
where you can swim.

Best Samothraki Sights:
The main
sights are the church of the Assumption built in 1875, , the folklore museum
and the Tower of Gattilousi.
- The Church of the
Assumption of the Virgfin Mary is well worth visiting for its old icons
and the relics of the "Five Martyrs of Samothrace"( Manuel, gregorios,
Michael, Theodoros and Gheorghios) who were martyred in 1836 for their
faith in Christ.On the Sunday after Easter there is a celebration in their
memory .
- At the the folklore
museum ,which was built a few years ago in order to show the rich cultural
tradition and heritage of the region,you can see objects from everyday
rural life, household utensils, tools, embroideries, women materials, ,
furniture and representative local costumes.
- The ruins
of medieval Byzantine Tower of Gattilusi -which was built in 1430 by the rule of the Genoese Gattilusi family to protect the
island by the pirates-is also worth seeing. It's situated at a huge
rock at the entrance of Hora. The view from up there is fantastic!
