Overview:
Rodopi Prefecture, between the
mountain range of Rodopi and the North of the Aegean Sea, is a piece of pure
land. Accompanied by plenty of myths and an important historical background,
the area impresses with the traditional element keeping so alive and combining
with the eastern influences. East and West co-exist in amazing landscapes of
pure natural beauty. Tradition remains indelible through the culture and the
various customs, while the University of Thrace in Komotini
points out the modern element of life.

Special Events:
The multi-cultural Rodopi
retains many religious and other traditions and customs. Festivities for the
celebration of saints take pace all year round. Especially on St. Charalambos
and St. Athanasios, in St. George village, the custom of "Kourbani" is held. In
Komotini various festivals take place, of which the most important is the
Festival of the Liberation of Thrace, with a big parade on May 14th.
Among others is the celebration of "Ginekokratia" (Gynaecocracy), also known as
the "Babo's feast", held in many districts, Xylagani, Stryme etc.
