Overview:
Laconia, between Myrtoo Sea and Messiniakos
bay, offers landscapes of pure natural beauty. It is comprised by two
Mountains, Taygetos and Parnonas, and by two peninsulas. It is located below Mount Taygetos, a little south
of the ancient city. History is combined indelible through numerous sights,
monasteries and museums.
Best Laconia Sights:
- the Archaeological
Museum of Sparta and Mystras
- the Acropolis of
Sparta, with the remains of a Roman Theatre
- the Sanctuary of
Artemis Orthia
- the ruins of the
ancient fortress of Monevasia, including the Church of Agia Sophia
Places to visit:
- Mystras, a
monastery town, a few miles to the west of Sparta
- Monevasia, a
medieval village on the lower slopes of the Rock of Monevasia
- caves with
underground lakes and rivers at Glyfada and Alepotripa in the Diros region
Special Events:
Some important cultural
events take place in Laconia. Sparta Summer
Festival (in June - August), the Assopos Fig Festival / Cultural Summer (end of
August) and the Gythion Festival (late July - early August) are worth visiting.
Summer festivities are also held in the Gerraki Castle, while the
Mystras Celebrations in honor of Paleologos dynasty are a unique experience.
