Capital: Serres
Overview:
The Prefecture of Serres is a flat region
surrounded by the mountains of Kerkini, Vertiskos, Kerdylia, Orvilos, Menikio
and Paggaio, while it is watered by the Strymonas River that flows into
Strymonikos bay (Orfinos). Great beaches are described, as well as landscapes
of natural beauty and sites witnessing a history from the depths of time. The
capital, Serres, is a modern, bustling city combining the new with the old.

Amphipolis, with the famous sculpture of "Leontas of Amphipolis"

Cathedral, known for its mosaics

- Turkish Monuments,
such as the Bezesteni ("fabric market"), the Zintizirli Tzami (mosque) and the Temple of Ahmet Pasas

waterfalls, streams, bridges and churches to be seen
- Kerkini Lake, protected by the
International Convention of Ramsar
Special Events:
Of the most important
cultural festivities taking place in Serres Prefecture are "Anastenaria" for
Saints' Constantine and Helen celebration on May 21st, with the custom of fire
walking, Gerakina in Nigrita during Easter, Gynaecocracy in Monoklisia and
N.Petra villages on January 8th, the Thracian custom of Kalogeros in
Agia Eleni village on Ash Monday, and the custom of Kidonas on June 24th.
Other festivities are the "Matiasma" the Carnival night in Emm.Papas, the
Cherry Festival in Anastasia, "Eleftheria" in Serres and Sidirokastro on June
22nd and 27th.

beaches:
Some very good beaches, and
very attractive during the summer season, are there in Ofriniou beach, such as
Touzla, Kariani, and others.
