October opens with seeding. We put the winter potatoes in the garden, the leeks, the parsley, dill and celery and cut the first cabbages. The olives have been matured so we make “crushed olives”(matses). We gather the winter pears and quinces from the trees. On the 26th of October, celebrating the day of Saint Dimitrios, we “open” the barrel and drink the first sips of the new wine. Red wine from the variety "arikara'" and white from the variety "petrolano'". Olive gathering (liomazema) has begun. On 28th of October in the national day of Greece, the students parade wearing the traditional costumes of Kythera and follows dancing in the main square of the town.
