Gavdos Island the southern
most border of Greece and Europe, is opposite of
Sfakia, in the middle of the Libyan Sea. It has up to 40
inhabitants and is the favorite holiday destination for quiet and free camping
lovers.
On the north west of the island are
the remains of a roman era city succeeded by a Byzantine town, seat of a bishop
and by 8,000 inhabited. Only 3 of the five old villages are inhabited, while
there are two new settlements, Karave, in the harbor, and Sarakiniko. The
island's two bays, Sarakiniko and Sarakinou, remind of the pirates' times.
The main town is Kastri and
one of the best beaches is Sarakinos, a sandy cove. Others are Korfos, Agios
Ioannis, Potamos, Lavraka and Tripiti. The nature's landscapes are the best
sights.
The temperature may reach
over 40 degrees Celsius in the summer and the barren island provides little
protection from the sun.
