Ikaria became a military base after the death of Alexander the Great in 323. The Drakano Tower and the bordering fortress are among the best-conserved military ruins from the Hellenistic period in the Aegean. The fortress is positioned on the northeastern tip of the island (Fanari), near the small village of Faros. The Drakano Tower is one of the best examples of Athenian military architecture. It was built during the time of Alexander the Great, around the 4th century BC, and served as an observation tower for the Aegean traffic sailing through the waterway between Ikaria and Samos. Greek naval forces damaged the tower in 1827. A dirt path starting from the village of Faros still directs us to the ancient fortress.
